UTC PulsarCap

~An Emerging Technology~

Introduction

Ultracapacitor is a high energy and power density energy storage device. It is not a battery but rather behaves as a capacitor. The UTC PulsarCap represents a family of breakthrough devices based on proprietary electrochemical technology that bridges the performance gap between batteries and capacitors. The UTC PulsarCap product line has been designed to enable technology companies to solve many of their most challenging power management problems.

When choosing an energy storage device be it a battery or a capacitor two of the most important parameters are: energy density-which defines how much energy can be stored in a given volume, and power density which determines how fast the energy can be put into or taken out of that volume. Batteries typically have low power densities and high energy densities. Conversely conventional capacitors have high power densities and low energy densities. The UTC PulsarCap resides between these two extremes. The UTC PulsarCap is a high-power energy storage device that supplies 100 times the power level attainable from batteries and stores 20 times more energy for a given volume than conventional capacitors.

To meet demanding peak power requirements the UTC PulsarCap is commonly used in conjunction with a battery in a hybrid system.

Due to power limitation batteries usually have to be sized to meet the peak power requirement. Using a UTC PulsarCap together with a battery allows the UTC PulsarCap to ˇ§load levelˇ¨the system. In this way the battery can be sized to meet only the average power while the UTC PulsarCap supplies the needed peak power. This leveling of the batteryˇ¦s load greatly increases its service life. In addition this hybrid system is both smaller in volume and better in peak power performance than the original stand-alone battery.

The UTC PulsarCap also has other useful qualities that make it superior to a battery in certain applications. For example battery cycle lives are usually measured in 100s or at best 1000s. however cycle life for a UTC PulsarCap typically exceeds 100,000 with little or no decrease in performance. Recharging a UTC PulsarCap takes less than a second even after standing discharged for years and voltages as high as 100 volts are readily attainable.

In addition UTC utilizes a true bi-polar configuration enabling greater miniaturization and higher energy and power densities. This patented packaging system allows the UTC ultracapcitor to be shock resistant to 50,000 gˇ¦s. capable of withstanding demanding thermal environments and manufactured in extraordinarily small sizes.

In summary the UTC PulsarCap offers the unique combination of high power density and very small unit size - a combination that cannot be equaled by any other technology in existence today. All together these extraordinary capabilities give system designers the freedom to achieve dramatically new levers of performance and functionality in their products.
